District-W Reflects on a Week of Art & Visual Culture from LA to Berlin
It’s been an exciting week for artists and art lovers around the world. In many countries and cultures, May 1st, often known as May Day, holds a significance, whether it be political and historically cause for protest, as in Berlin, socialist workers’ day or Labour Day, a day for romance, dancing and Maibäume (decorated birch trees given to a lover), a day for a Vappu carnival, as in Finland, or a continuation of the pre-Christian tradition to celebrate the beginning of Summer and the Roman goddess, Flora. It’s not surprising then, that it’s become a day noted for art and visual culture, with fairs and festivals popping up from LA to Berlin.
