This December we wanted to make sure that you ladies are ready to look your very best for the festivities. Yvonne Liang spoke with Liverpool-based make-up artist and hair stylist Annette Jones to get the low down on how to achieve that vintage glamour look of the Hollywood Golden era beauties.
- What are the key features of vintage glamour make up?
The key features of vintage glamour make up has to be the lips, a statement deep red glossy lip, with a flawless base foundation, volumized lashes, those wonderful arched eyebrows, and a wonderful gloss highlighter.
- What are some make tips you can share for getting the look of Hollywood Golden era stars such as Marilyn Monroe, Marlene Dietrich and Rita Hayworth?
To get that Hollywood glamour look, start with a good primer, then a matte foundation mixed with a moisturizer for that dewy look, actually Marilyn Monroe would use Vaseline under her foundation. Keep the eye shadow soft with highlighter in the corner and under the brow bone, a creamy white on the base, with very soft beige on the outer crease. You could actually use a very subtle silvery blue for the festive season, the eyeliner is optional. Marilyn wore a brown eyeliner, while Rita Heyworth just wore a subtle shadow and those flicky eyelashes. White kohl eyeliner on the inside of the eye is a must to brighten and widen the eyes. You can try to arch the eyebrow in subtle feather strokes, then use a very soft blush to the cheeks in pink or terracotta, and use a glossy highlighter on the cheek bones and and of course those wonderful red lips. Keep with a deep red as the blue under tones make your teeth look Hollywood white, finish off with a high shine gloss.
- How would you turn these looks into something more festive for the holiday season?
For a more festive spin on this, it’s got to be glitter for the holidays, simply add a glitter lip gloss over the red lipstick, or a touch of glitter to the eye socket, you can even get fine glitter eyeliner like Marilyn would wear in gold, but keep it minimum and classy. We don’t want to look like a Christmas tree – less is more.
- How do you plan on doing your own make up for Christmas and New Year’s this year?
For my own make up I have a very deep eye socket so my eyes do look great with a dark smoky eye, unfortunately i was not blessed with those beautiful pouting lips, so I’ll go with a nice neutral gold twinkling gloss, and focus on my best features my eyes mac do a great 3D glitter.
- What are some beauty products that women should purchase to enhance their look for Christmas/New Year festivities?
Some festive must haves include BOBBY BROWN limited edition glitter gold lip gloss enriched with vitamin C and E high shimmer, MAC’s 3D glitter which can be applied direct to the skin or combined with any other product, and lastly, NARS illuminator in Copacabana; it’s super silky so you only need a tiny drop for it to last.
