District W spoke with Daniel Singh, the owner of Damanino Bespoke Tailor about how he got into the business of making suits.
District W: When did you realise that your calling was for tailoring and design?
Daniel: I’ve always been interested in dressing well since a very young age. I was fond of mixing and matching different styles of clothes. Even as a small child, I wanted to select my outfits myself. I wanted to make sure I was always smartly dressed. I would even go to my father and ask him to spray me with his perfume for any occasion that seemed necessary. On seeing my father always busy making suit for thousands of customers as a child, I believe having been impregnated in that particular environment helped peak my interest in making it a career for myself.
District W: Tailoring dates back generations in your family. How does it feel to be a part of a family with such a rich history and how did your family’s experience impact the creation of Damanino, why did you want to create something new?
Daniel: After completing my Bachelor’s degree at a very young age, I joined the family business and began selling textiles. I designed my own shirts and found the customers very impressed by my work. The clothes I designed left lasting first impressions on many people. It was then that I realized I wanted to help dress people so they can create great first impressions as well. Especially in business, the way you dress can make a real difference. In the first four seconds of meeting someone new, you can be sure they have already scanned you up and down to see how you dress to form a judgment. So, I restarted the business from where my father had left it nearly 20 years prior.
District W: Since you founded Damanino, your business is becoming more and more global with markets opening, particularly in Australia and the U.S. Do you find that style and trends in men’s fashion vary based upon location or are there other factors to consider?
Daniel: Basically, there is a general consensus of fashion worldwide, as everyone follow the ones set in Paris. However, style, color and fit preferences definitely vary based on location. For example, the majority of people in the U.S. prefer a slightly more comfortable fit as compared to those in Australia. So it’s very important to understand the ever-changing style preferences of each group of customers. As a stylist, I must be up-to-date on the latest fashion trends so that I can understand the desires of each unique individual.
District W: Why do you feel it’s important to cultivate great style? Could you give some basic advice to the men who don’t think they have it in them or are not sure what suits them?
Daniel: Your style says a lot about you and your personality. It’s important to cultivate great style in order to leave a long lasting first impression. Everyone is capable of good style and it’s just a matter of finding the right fit and look for your body. My advice is to come to Damanino Bespoke. We will suit you up and style your personality!
District W: You can only make a first impression once and most people will take a decision based on appearance, do you think tailored suit can create a significant difference that will help businessmen in their careers?
Daniel: A tailored suit says a lot about you. Owning a proper, custom-made tailor suit that complement your physique and personality can definitely increase one’s self-confidence, self-esteem and self-belief. We believe that when a man is equipped with such ammunition there is no limit to his success.
District W: What would be your top 5 recommendations for men to create and cultivate their own style so they can be more successful?
- Always be well dressed, as you may never know whom you will meet today.
- Go to a great tailor and find out what style, color and pattern suits you. Stick to those preferences because they can make a big difference on how you appear.
- Don’t always overdress, but having a beautiful pair of shoes, nice leather belt and a classy watch will make a lot of difference.
- Style is very personalized.
- Understanding the nature of your work can help identify your best style.
District W: Could you name the most important details that one has to watch out for when buying the ideal suit, is there an ideal suit for every body type or is there a universally perfect suit that will fit most gentlemen?
- Make sure the shoulder width is not too wide.
- Sleeve length should show half an inch of the shirt cuff and making sure you always wear a French cuffed shirt.
- The length of the jacket should be no longer than half the length of your body, but slightly shorter than this would also be acceptable and fashionable.
- Fit preference will depend on each individual, but the jacket should not be too fitted that creases are formed on the front of the jacket due to too tight fitting, nor should it look like a box hanging on your body.
District W: Could you tell us what appeals to you most in the bespoke tailoring business, where do you think your greatest talent and what is your unique selling point lie?
Daniel: The word bespoke simply means “to be spoken for”. Therefore, buying a bespoke suit is to buy a suit that is created in order to bring out the best of a person’s personality. This is what I am best at. Time and experience have allowed me to develop the ability to help people dress in ways that assisted them in creating a long-lasting initial impression.
District W: Lastly where do you see yourself and Damanino in 5 years from now in your ideal world?
Daniel: My constant efforts have been about offering the absolute best quality at affordable prices to my customers. One of our top priorities is to improve our quality standards without cutting corners.
I see Damanino as one of the premium brands offering Exclusive menswear. We will keep expanding the company’s horizons to several countries and continue to cater to the upper middle to upper class customers who want to look and feel like a million dollars.
