‘This is the best Mexican restaurant in Bangkok,” exclaimed my dining companion emphatically, after our meal. Not having been to any of the others, I couldn’t compare, but the fish burrito was certainly one of the best I’ve tried. The homemade tortilla contained a ceviche of raw tuna, mango, avocado, rice and herbs that was super fresh and healthy. The New Orleans-born chef has worked with family recipes to create a menu which is lighter than normal Mexican comfort food. Probably the richest dish we had was the mole, a spicy, chilli-chocolate sauce, poured over an amazing mound of rice and tender pork.
Six different sauces are available to customize your meals, including the aptly names, Hellfire. Both of these dishes were new to me and throughout the evening I enjoyed learning a little more about Mexico in this laid back, sociable venue.
Set in a shophouse in central Ari, the interior has been painted the exact blue of Frida Khalo’s home, Casa Azul, now a museum in Mexico City. Original artworks were also ordered from the museum and a friend of the young team painted vibrant murals on some walls. A jumble of retro furniture, cacti and aloes in terracotta pots completes the homely vibe of the interior. There is also seating available outside to enjoy the fresh air.
Plenty of craft beers, wines and cocktails are on offer, including several fruity varieties of margaritas, free for ladies on Fridays from 4-7. Other deals and social evenings include Taco Tuesday with tacos at 50 baht each, Salsa dance on Thursdays, and a LGBT night.
Upstairs, past multiple hand-painted Day of the Dead skulls and stairs adorned with antique ceramic tiles is a really cool space designed to replicate Frida Khalo’s kitchen. It has a beautiful old dresser and a stunning, bright yellow floor. This space is available for group bookings at no extra charge and has a very nice atmosphere. Here there is also a 100″ projector for sports and movie nights. The pleasant unobtrusive music, mixed local crowd and friendly staff make this a welcome new feather in Ari’s cap, and a bit of a more authentic slice of Mexico at a farer price than some of it’s more hum drum competitors. ¡Buen provecho!
