Always on the lookout for the who’s who of the fashion scene, we recently spoke with GMM Grammy artist, Justin Pongumpai, about his new role as spokesperson for the Bangkok-based tailoring brand, Damanino.
District-W: When did you realize your passion was in performing and how did this turn into a career?
Justin: I always dreamt of being a singer/musician, but I never thought it would actually come true. I kind of stumbled into this industry when someone spotted me singing at a party and suggested that I go in to GMM Grammy for a screen test to see what happens. The CEO saw some potential in me and gave me the opportunity to train as an artist. At first, it was really hard completing the vocal training with no experience at all. After about a year or two of practicing for three hours every day, I finally got the big, six-year contract offer from GMM Grammy in Bangkok. It was a lot of hard work but now I am so happy and grateful that I get to do this as a career.
District-W: Do you feel it’s important to have great style in the industry you are in?
Justin: Yeah I feel like it is very important to have great style. You always want to look your best when you’re in front of the media’s eye. Depending on how you present yourself, you could get commercial deals and possibly become a presenter of a brand. In this industry, that’s where the money is at.
District-W: What style of suit fits you and your personality best?
Justin: I like the black, casual look because I’m a pretty easy-going guy. I like something I can be comfortable in and look good in at the same time. For me, the material is important for when I’m picking out a shirt or T-shirt. I like to wear materials that are comfortable and soft. It’s never been more important to me to look great than to feel comfortable because if I am not comfortable, I’m not confident.
District-W: Have you always felt comfortable and confident in suits?
Justin: When I was younger I didn’t feel comfortable in a suit. I felt awkward, honestly. Now, I really enjoy being in a high-quality suit. It makes a big difference when the suit is tailored for the individual. It makes me feel classy and like I should be drinking a glass of scotch. Now that I have Damanino to tailor my suits and shirts, I feel excited to get dressed up for any event.
District-W: How does it feel to be the new face for Damanino Bespoke Tailors?
Justin: I’m not going to lie — it feels pretty awesome to be the new face of the Damanino brand. The owner, Daniel Singh, and the staff are really kind and friendly people. It’s an honor and a privilege that Damanino would let me be the face for them and I’m very grateful for the opportunity.
District-W: Do you enjoy working with the owner of Damanino, Daniel Singh?
Justin: Yes, I really like working with Daniel. I find it a wonderful experience when I can work with someone who is both friendly and professional at the same time. I can see the difference between someone who is doing a job because they have to do it and someone who does it because they want to do it. Daniel definitely loves his business and is passionate about making the best suits possible.
District-W: What do you like best about Damanino?
Justin: There are plenty of things that I like about Damanino but most of all I like that the owner really cares about the quality of the suits and the image it represents. All of the suits are handmade by master tailors who have been doing this worldwide for over 30 years. I’m proud to help represent this company and what they stand for.
